MNU offers a major in theatre (PDF 102.25 KB Help ) under the Division of Humanities. Students take a core of basic theatre courses and select one of three emphasis tracks: acting/directing; technical theatre; or music theatre. In addition to the theatre major, MNU offers a speech-theatre education (PDF 100.35 KB Help ) degree.

The MNU Theatre Department holds open auditions for upcoming productions from the student body for mainstage and one-act plays. No need to be a major in order to participate. MNU has produced over 45 shows during the past 20 years, including: Man of La Mancha, To Kill A Mockingbird, As You Like It, God’s Favorite, Steel Magnolias, The Nerd, The Foreigner, Cotton Patch Gospel, Godspell, and a 2007 Midwest premier of the musical Dear Emma.

Student actors and technicians learn and perform in the Bell Cultural Events Center for the Performing Arts. Facilities include a mainstage performance hall, black box theatre, scene building shop, large makeup and costume rooms, green room and set storage. 2007-2008 productions of Dear Emma, Greater Tuna, and 3 one-act plays performed for a total audience of 1,400. Computer assisted light and sound design enhance the technical side of our theatre program.

MNU also offers on-campus summer theatre camps to middle school and high school age students. Theatre students lead classes and assist the artist-in residence, Rhonda Carlson.

Theatre students can audition for one of MNU’s PR traveling ministry teams which presents drama and music to high school camps over the summer and performs in churches and youth retreats during the school year.

MNU faculty have a wide background in theatre and provide many opportunities for learning and growth. Career paths are many and varied with a degree in theatre from MNU.
