Your first semester of college is here and the inevitable has happened the flu epidemic that invaded your residence hall has made you its latest victim. Fever, chills and aches are setting in, and your mother and her chicken soup are miles away. Don't panic. MidAmerica's Health Center - the next best thing to dear old mom - is standing by.

MNU is devoted to assisting students in developing lifestyles of total wellness, as well as meeting their clinical health needs. Recognizing that one's physical, emotional, and spiritual health are interrelated, we are committed to nurturing all three aspects. Preventative education, health screenings, personal support, and an emphasis on nutrition and exercise are a few of the avenues which the Health Center will promote with an attitude of Christ-like wellness, outside the traditional clinical setting.

Location
Located in Campus Center across from the student post office boxes, the health office has a nurse practitioner available with office hours posted each semester. When you need assistance, you may visit the center on a drop-in basis or by calling ahead. For medical attention after hours, contact your resident assistant or resident educator.

Services and Schedule
Mid-level Providers are highly skilled professionals who are licensed to provide medical services that would otherwise be performed by physicians. Many MNU students seek treatment at nearby clinics where they are seen by a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant rather than by a physician.

Students can receive that same quality care at the Student Health Center at a fraction of the cost.
Brenda Lamping, ARNP, is available in the health center during posted office hours Monday – Friday.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Completed and signed Student Health Form.
  • Proof of immunizations including dates.

Immunization Policy
Students at MNU are required to complete a health history and immunization record before enrolling in classes. You should submit your proof of immunizations to the Student Health Center. These immunizations will become a part of your individual health record.

In keeping with the standards for immunization set by the Centers for Disease Control and adopted by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, the following immunizations are required for traditional students at MNU:

  • Meningitis Vaccine (New Requirement) For all students living in residential housing
  • Measles/mumps/rubella (MMR), 2 doses for all students who were born after January 1, 1957.
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria booster, within the last 10 years.

The following immunizations are not required, but highly recommended by the American College Health Association and the Centers for Disease Control.
  • Tuberculosis screening (within the last 12 months)
  • Hepatitis B Vaccine (series of three vaccines, available in the MNU Health Center)
  • Varicella: Chicken Pox (two doses for those with no history of disease or with a negative antibody titer.)
  • Influenza: Flu (one dose annually in the Fall season - available in the fall on campus)

If you or your parents do not have records of your immunizations, ask your high school for a copy of your health file. If you received any shots at your doctor's office or public health department, they may also be able to provide copies of records. If you are transferring from another college or university, ask for a copy of any health information you might have provided to that institution.

The MMR and TD vaccines are available through the MNU Health Center for a minimal cost. Failure to comply with these requirements will affect your eligibility to register for classes.

International students need verification of a second MMR; Td (tetanus/diphtheria) booster, within the last ten years; TB (tuberculosis) skin test within the last 12 months; and an IVP injection for an adult who has never been immunized against polio.

If you have a medical condition that renders it unsafe to receive the immunizations, you must provide signed documentation from your physician. Members of religious organizations whose teachings are opposed to immunizations must submit a written statement to be on file in the Student Health Center.

CONFIDENTIALITY STATEMENT
All information and student health history forms are confidential and are used to advise students regarding their health needs. No information is released from the Health Center without the student’s specific, written permission.

Costs incurred due to outside referrals and diagnostic lab work necessary to be done at another facility will be the responsibility of the student.

Medical Insurance

For students who have no other health insurance coverage, low-cost group health insurance may be purchased during college registration. Information about insurance coverage and cost is available from the Business Office, located in the Lunn Building or by calling 913-971-3294.
